Founded in March 2007, the Société de la Tour Eiffel Foundation aims to fostering creativity and innovation in the domain of construction and the environment and to favour the insertion of students and young professionals. With a view to sharing and recognising theses values, the foundation sponsored an architectural competition in 2008 (in association with Abvent, a specialist architectural software house) open to students based on the creation of a contemporary high rise edifice located on the Champ-de-Mars in proximity to the Eiffel Tower.
An award ceremony was held in March 2009 followed by an exhibition of the projects from 1-12 April at the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine (Palais de Chaillot, Paris XVIème). A kaleidoscope of the projects are shown on the Foundation’s website: www.fondationsocietetoureiffel.org.
The 2010 Eiffel competition was based around the disused girder railway bridge at Bordeaux constructed by Gustave Eiffel in 1860 and which had recently been saved from destruction and listed as an historical monument.
A call upon ideas for the future conversion of the defunct bridge was reserved for students of architecture, engineering or landscaping either individually or in multidisciplinary teams which could also include students of other advanced educational establishments (sociology, urbanism…) having been born after 31 December 1980.
The Foundation was partnered again by Abvent and also by the “Sauvons la Passerelle” association (co-ordinator Myriam LARNAUDIE-EIFFEL).
The jury consisted of local dignitaries including the maire, Eiffel family members and renowned architects in addition to the organisers.
An award ceremony was held in Bordeaux in the town hall on Thursday 14 October 2010. A catalogue of all the entrants is available. The results and various projects can be viewed on the Foundation’s website.
For 2011, the foundation proposed to the finalists of the previous competitions, either individually or as a team, a study sponsorship in relation to Gustave Eiffel initiative located overseas.
The winners were two students from the Bordeaux architectural college who undertook a study trip in South America (Chile, Peru and Bolivia). their findings being the subject of a film and a book on the myths and realities of the engineer’s presence in that part of the world which were presented at the SIMI, commercial real estate trade fair in Paris in December 2011. You can see the book on the foundation website
En 2012, the foundation was renewed for a 5-year period.
